The ecotourist looking for unique ecosystems and a one of a kind wildlife experience would do well to look into Topsail Hill Preserve.

Topsail Hill got its name from its 25-foot white quartz sand dunes, which from the clear water of the Gulf of Mexico looked like sails to the early settlers. On the other side of these dunes, freshwater dune lakes and swamps have developed, giving life to rare ecosystems that are ready to be explored.

Take your pick of six trails ranging from difficult to easy and see for yourself why this 1600 acre park is considered a haven to bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts. As many as 13 endangered species of both plants and animals call these lands home. Some, you will not find anywhere else.

For the young wildlife ranger in your group, interactive programs for all ages are held in the amphitheater. Check floridastateparks.org for the schedule during your visit. Visitors looking for interactive exploration will also enjoy geocaching, and outdoor activity using any potable GPS devise. Pick up the list of coordinates at the ranger station to see what this park has in store for you.

For those wanting a more adventurous take on beach day (though there is nothing wrong with sunbathing with a good book as long as you wear sunscreen!) rent a kayak or paddle board from the park store, load up on your street legal golf cart, and see the oceanic wildlife up close for yourself. You can also bike up and down the 3.2 miles of undeveloped beachside for a better look at the dunes.
